World AIDS Day 2024: Reflect, Honor, and Act
NYC Gaymers joins millions worldwide in observing World AIDS Day, now marking its 36th anniversary. This day remains a critical platform to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS, honor the lives impacted by the epidemic, and renew our commitment to a future free from HIV/AIDS.
Today, we reflect on the lives of the more than 40.4 million people who have died from AIDS-related illnesses and stand in solidarity with the estimated 39 million people currently living with HIV/AIDS globally. Let’s also celebrate the incredible progress achieved in the fight against HIV/AIDS, thanks to the relentless efforts of scientists, activists, communities, and governments.
NYC Gaymers recognizes the fight is far from over. HIV and AIDS remain significant public health challenges, particularly for marginalized and vulnerable populations. Barriers like stigma, discrimination, and inequities in healthcare access persist, underscoring the need for continued action and advocacy.
This year, NYC Gaymers made strides toward our commitment to ending the HIV epidemic by 2030. We are proud to share some of our progress:
Amplifying Voices: Our programs continue to center the experiences of people living with HIV/AIDS, providing safe spaces for dialogue and empowerment.
Educational Gaming Initiatives: We are working to expand our Gaymers Against Violence programming to additional colleges and universities.
Twilight Positivity Panel Success: This year’s events brought even more voices to the table, creating a dynamic discussion about the intersections of gaming, sexual health, and living with HIV/AIDS. Feedback from participants affirms its impact in breaking down stigma.
As we move forward, we’re determined to:
Continue to develop new partnerships with public health organizations, educational institutions and non-profit organizations to collaborate on inclusive, culturally relevant gaming experiences.
Increase participation in advocacy campaigns for equitable access to HIV treatment and services and amplify undetectable = untransmittable and Treatment as Prevention (TasP).
Grow our Twilight Positivity series, amplifying even more diverse voices in the conversation.
On this World AIDS Day, let us reflect, honor, and act. Together, we can shape a future where HIV/AIDS is no longer a barrier to health, dignity, or opportunity.
